Purépecha Colonial Dictionary
The colonial (16th-17th centuries) dictionary provided for online access is a compilation of terms provided through several sources, most notably the work of J. Benedict Warren (Gilberti), Diccionario Grande de la Lengua de Michoacán (See bibliography under Purépecha Language). The dictionary includes references from other colonial manuscripts and publications. A sources link will be added to the dictionary to provide more details for each term.
The conventions for searching the dictionary database are from the colonial orthography (spelling) of words in Spanish and Purépecha (at that time called Tarasco-Tarascan).
The attached article by Ramos (2004) provides an introduction to these issues for Spanish and the work of Chamoreau (1994) and Warren (1991, 2007) provide resources for colonial Purépecha orthography.
